Escaping Boredom

Boredom is the psycological “common cold” of the human personality. It seems to have swept over us in epidemic proportions in the last 20 years. The poet T. S. Elliot captured the horrible feeling of boredom when his character, J Alfred Prufock, spoke of measuring out his life in coffee spoons.

The social conditions that have brought the wave of boredom are quite plain. Our modern culture is not over satisfied with food, entertainment and luxuries. Past generations did not have time to get bored, they were too busy surviving.

Dr Sam Koen writing in “Psychology Today” believes the only adequate cure for boredom is to jump outside the mundane anxiety ridden reality and include yourself in a living, meaningful vision for the world.

Was Jesus speaking of such a challenge when He said:

“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, bet whoever loses his life for me will save it.”
