God’s gift to his people
Mothers Day is not the invention of the shopping centres!
The story of Mother’s Day is a long one. Contrary to the cynicism of many, it is not the recent invention of big shopping centres. Celebrations can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who dedicated a day to honour the mother of their gods. During the 17th century, England introduced Mothering Sunday where children presented their mothers with flowers and special “mothering” cakes. America developed the idea at the beginning of the last century when Anna Jarvis pushed for mothers to receive due recognition for the enormous contribution they make to society.
Mother’s Day gives us the opportunity to recognise the service mothers provide to their children for the benefit of each individual and the health of society overall. God designed the system so that children can be nurtured. Let us give thanks for the deposits our mothers have invested into our lives.
Mother’s Day is the celebration of one of God’s gifts to His people.
