Human tragedy, like this week’s earthquake in Christchurch, literally shake our faith.  Many of us find it hard to reconcile God’s sovereignty and power, with natural disasters. It is times like this when we need the Scriptures to provide meaning and comfort.

Firstly meaning comes as we read Romans 8:21 and understand that even our physical world is decaying and passing away.  God reminds us regularly that this earth is not the final home for humanity.  We need salvation from our sin and its consequences.  Natural disasters remind us that God is a power much greater than us and His purpose is the new creation.

Secondly comfort comes from Psalm 46, when we are reminded that God is our refuge and we can call upon Him for help.

In the end we can face the troubles and tragedies of life by ourselves or we can choose to face them with God.  Sometimes we can’t see His plan but we can trust that He has one.
