The World is Watching

In the aftermath of the New Zealand earthquakes many pictures of devastation have emerged.  Media outlets regularly include pictures of broken ‘churches’. It was encouraging to see pictures in the Southern Cross of one Christchurch Church in action.  The pictures showed members helping people to safety.

  • There is no doubt people are watching God’s people.
  • Once you are ‘known’ as a Christian, your neighbours, work mates and friends, are constantly watching your actions and listening to your words.
  • They watch you drive out on a Sunday morning.
  • They listen to how you respond to challenges and problems.
  • Most of them know, that Christians are supposed to love God and love their neighbours.
  • They watch to see whether we actually do it.
  • They are evaluating whether our faith in Christ makes a difference.
  • Is it real??

Today, church is about what we are known for in the community.  The crucial question, ‘Is love a way of life for us?

Though mountains shake and tremble…

Human tragedy, like this week’s earthquake in Christchurch, literally shake our faith.  Many of us find it hard to reconcile God’s sovereignty and power, with natural disasters. It is times like this when we need the Scriptures to provide meaning and comfort.

Firstly meaning comes as we read Romans 8:21 and understand that even our physical world is decaying and passing away.  God reminds us regularly that this earth is not the final home for humanity.  We need salvation from our sin and its consequences.  Natural disasters remind us that God is a power much greater than us and His purpose is the new creation.

Secondly comfort comes from Psalm 46, when we are reminded that God is our refuge and we can call upon Him for help.

In the end we can face the troubles and tragedies of life by ourselves or we can choose to face them with God.  Sometimes we can’t see His plan but we can trust that He has one.

The Ultimate Reality

  • A multitude that no-one can count.
  •  People from every tribe and nation.
  •  Everyone gathered around a throne, the throne!
  •  All worshipping God.

John had a glimpse of this ultimate reality. It is the destiny for all who follow Jesus.

We can look at the walls of the new building in Moombara Street and many of us will feel relief that a dream is becoming a reality. But as we pray about the ministry such a building will enable, let us not lose perspective. The people that gather are the ones who make it to the heavenly gathering not our wonderful new walls.

Please pray that the people who gather in this new building will glorify God by their words and actions. Pray that this earthly gathering will translate many thousands of people into the heavenly gathering.

Senior Minister

Only God

When we look back at the lives of Jesus’ first disciples, we see many occasions where only God could have achieved the things that occurred.  When we think back through our own lives, there are no doubt times, when only God could have brought about the circumstances.

  •  Transformed lives,
  • Answered prayers,
  • Changed circumstances and
  • Unexplained blessings

are all examples of only God being at work.

Romans 1:20 makes it clear that the proper response to the things God does, is to acknowledge His power and majesty and to glorify Him and give Him thanks.

On Saturday night, 26th February, we are assembling as a community to glorify God and give Him thanks for all the things He has done for us.  It is a great truth in our world and our lives that God is the only and ultimate life force.

Plan to be at the upper level of Dapto Mall to enjoy a delicious roast dinner with dessert as we celebrate those things that are only possible through God.  The meal will be great value at $20 per adult, $10 for school-age children and a maximum of $60 per family (because this is something we believe everyone in our community can be part of, don’t let cost prevent you from attending, as Stephen has some sponsorship available).

This is one of those moments, in our church’s life, where we recognise what only God can do!

Senior Minister
