Don’t Just Sit There ….
The countdown is well and truly on now to the official opening of our new building. With the roof in place, great progress was made installing the framework for the internal walls and preliminary wiring during this week.
On Saturday, August 13 at 2pm the Archbishop of Sydney, Peter Jensen will be preaching at the official opening to which the whole of Dapto Anglican Church are invited.
Before then we have a lot to do! Many of you have seen other religious communities erect their whole building over a weekend. For us we are responsible for all the landscaping,
-
plants,
-
trees,
-
turf,
-
pathways . . . .
all need to be established before Council will give us our Occupancy Certificate which will allow us to start using our building.
Therefore, please set aside some time ….
4/7 – 15/7 for preparation of gardens beds etc
16/7 – 23/7 for “Planting Week”
30/7 for “Turfing Day”
Other jobs for us to complete include…..
- Painting the current front fence
- Cleaning kitchen equipment
- Recovering chairs for the café …
and many, many more ….
Sign up next week on the clipboards at your service.
It’s time to leave a very visible living legacy for our community
So plan to put ‘skin in the game’ of our building project. Dapto is watching!!

Pastoring at D.A.C.
‘Instinctively I shrink back from people who are in pain. Who can know whether they want to talk about their predicament or not? Do they want to be consoled or cheered up? What good can my presence possibly do? My mind spins out these rationalisations and as a result I end up doing the worst possible thing…I stay away.’
Phillip Yancey, ‘Where is God When it Hurts?’
Last weekend we hosted our annual pastoral care training day where author, speaker and pastoral care worker, Jill McGilvray reminded us of the Biblical imperative to love one another. Although we may feel like staying away from hurting people or, alternatively, we have our list of cliché answers to give in complex situations, Jill encouraged us to take the initiative, practice the art of listening and take the time needed to be a prayerful and long term encouragers of others.
‘Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.’ (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
At Dapto Anglican Church we have two formal pastoral care structures. Firstly, each congregation has a Congregational Life Leadership team which go out of their way to welcome the newcomers of our church and to be in prayer for the building up of Jesus’ people.
Secondly, we have more than 35 Growth Groups that meet throughout the week where we meet together with God’s word open while supporting one another through the challenges of life – if you are currently not in a group and would like to check one out, talk to Scott Goode.
However, pastoral care also happens in the ordinary circumstances of life.
What are the opportunities all around you where you can be an encourager of others in the name of Jesus?

Assistant Pastor
Implications of the Gospel
Christians live and work in a culture that is increasingly reflecting values distorted by idolatry (the replacement of God). Patterns of communication are directed towards stirring up the worst aspects of the human heart (lust, materialism, greed and vengeance, just to name a few). Work places are dominated by behaviours that are self seeking and place short term financial gain over the long-term health of the organisation or it’s employees. Government appears more interested in retaining power than anything else.
Christians need to think out the implications of the gospel for: business, government, media, entertainment and art. When it comes to business we need to understand that our excellence in work is a means to gain credibility for our faith. Whatever we do is an opportunity to be distinctive in how we live and serve others. One of the most powerful ways to demonstrate the truth of our faith is to serve the ‘common good’ and avoid the pitfalls of selfishness and grabbing for power. God’s rule is the ultimate reality as the anti-God things of this world will eventually disappear.
