21st November, 2011

Dear brothers and sisters,
God has mercifully answered your prayers. Bronwyn was discharged from hospital over the weekend after her pancreatitis settled reasonably quickly. In fact she came home and promptly enjoyed a BBQ feast with family friends!

As for her slow growing recurrent tumours (in her left lung, and liver), it is likely she will again try oral chemotherapy called 5FU. Despite constant back pain and weakness, God continues to give her strength. We’ve certainly had our valleys both physically and emotionally. But God sustains her joy in him.

Rachel is now in Vanuatu helping proclaim Christ with a Scripture Union team. Music exams are over for Thomas and Grace, and Naomi continues on her busy schedule which now includes driving lessons from Dad. NTE preparations appear to be on track.

Thank you so so much for praying. We are very grateful to God for your love.

Do take care,
the Chin family.

16NOV2011 – Bronwyn back in hospital

Dear brothers and sisters,

Sadly Bronwyn is back in hospital with her second bout of pancreatitis. Also her latest CT scan shows slow growing recurrences of her cancer in her liver and left lung. But as always she remains in good spirits which enables us all to cope well. God willing she will be out of hospital in a few days.

Rachel finished her HSC last week. Thank you for praying for her. She was dissapointed with a couple of papers because although she knew all her work, she ran out of time. But it was wonderful to see her entrust herself to God in all this. Very kind friends have paid for her to join a Scripture Union mission to Vanuatu next week. She will also join us for our AFES National Training Event in Canberra soon after.

Naomi, Grace and Thomas remain busy and well.

So between hospital visits, music exams, school, preparations for Vanuatu and work, life is a little hectic. But God continues to care so wonderfully for us.

On the AFES front, it’s the countdown to our National Training Event in early December. We are expecting around 1500 people in an ever increasingly complex conference with multiple parallel programs. I’m due to give 2 talks at the main conference, and 3 other addresses at pre-NTE events. Over 60 campus teams will then partner 60 plus local churches throughout Australia on various missions.

Please thank God that:

Bronwyn is in good care and in good spirits.

Our family is coping relatively well through this trial

We are being wonderfully supported by our church family and friends.

Please ask God:

to heal Bronwyn’s pancreatitis quickly and keep her cancer at bay.

grow all of us more like Jesus through these trials

transform the lives of all those attending our NTE in Canberra

save many lives in the missions we take part in afterward with local churches throughout Australia.

Thanks for loving us

Dear brothers and sisters,

Thanks for your ongoing prayers.

As I write, Bronwyn is studying biology with our oldest daughter (Rachel) who is in the middle of her higher school certificate (hsc) exams.3 down and 3 to go (finishing early November). All of us can’t wait for them to end! In the kindness of God, it’s been relatively stress free. (I’m sure parents get more stressed!)

Bronwyn was able to attend most of the AFES wives conference last weekend. As you can imagine, many were delighted that she was there and able to contribute helpfully.

Bronwyn is in good spirits (as always) and holding her own at 38 kg these days.Within hours of the last email I wrote, she was in hospital with pancreatitis.Although that has settled, we know how vulnerable she is.But God has graciously answered your prayers and sustained her with joy in Him, andan ability to endure through her weakness. Our next set of scans are in mid November. Will keep you informed.

Naomi, Grace, & Thomas are well and enjoying their busy lives at school & sport.

I’m a little weary but well. There’s a fair bit on my plate at the moment. But our church family continue to provide meals twice a week and mow our lawn, which we are so very very thankful for. It really is an enormous help.

Please thank God for:

sustaining Bronwyn so graciously.

enabling us to number our days for his glory keeping our family looking to Jesus

providing us with so much help from our church family.

Please ask God our father to:

continue to heal Bronwyn if it is his will.

grow our children in the love and fear of Jesus.

save and transform many lives at our National Training Event (NTE) this December.

enable me to preach well at a combined churches event this Sunday night, and at NTE

Thank you for loving us.

All our love,

Richard has been busy caring for his sick wife, Bronwyn as well as continuing on with his work in sharing God within our Australian Universities. Richard is based in Wollongong and has sent us 3 quick updates which we now pass on to you for ongoing prayer.

LATEST NEWS FROM THE CHINS
- Fri 2 Sept
Dear brothers and sisters,

Thank you for your prayers. As I write, Bronwyn remains fragile but stable. The latest scans show a spot in her liver that suggests a low grade recurrence that is

being held at bay by sporadic chemotherapy for the moment. In God’s kindness however, she remains in wonderful spirits and full of humour. She was even Rachel’s most valuable study partner through her HSC trials which have gone relatively well. Otherwise family life is as busy as ever with the business end of the school term and the soccer season.

I’ve enjoyed preaching through Joshua and speaking at the Wollongong University Mission. Now I’m in the midst of preparing sermons for church on Job. What a great book of the bible. What a great God we have.

On the AFES front
* The missions around the country continue to see more students saved. God is so gracious.
* Another 10 (so far) have applied for senior staff positions and grants have been approved to seed fund 6 of them.
* Our National Training Event looms on the horizon.

If you are in striking distance to Wollongong, please join us for our Supporters’ Dinner

AFES SUPPORTERS DINNER:
When: Sat 17th September 6pm (registration) for a 6:30 pm dinner (there will be a tour of Wollongong Uni at 5pm if you would like a visit!)
Where: Wollongong TAFE (next to Wollongong Uni, directions to be received after RSPVP-ing)
Cost: $30 per person for a fabulous banquet meal (pay on the night)
RSVP: Sarah Schachtel on sarahschachtel@hotmail.com OR 0466413303 (mobile) OR 42107702 (home phone)

For your prayers Please thank God for
* Keeping our horizons on Jesus through Bronwyn’s cancer
* saving students on campuses throughout Australia
* growing our staff team Please pray that
* I faithfully preach through Job to the glory of God
* Bronwyn’s cancer helps us grow in Christ likeness and if it is God’s will that she is given long life for his glory.
* Many more students on campus are saved.
* More supporters will partner us to proclaim Christ on campus and raise up generations of students to serve him here and overseas.

Thank you for loving us.

The Chin clan.

URGENT UPDATES
- Sat 3 Sept
Dear brothers and sisters,
Within a few hours of sending my last email, Bronwyn developed acute abdominal pain and is now in Wollongong hospital with pancreatitis. It appears that one of the pancreatic ducts is obstructed. But we don’t know the cause conclusively. Obviously we think that a recurrence of the cancer is a very real possibility. Will find out over the next few days. Our surgeon is out of the country till next week.

Please ask our gracious God to:
* alleviate Bronwyn from the pain and heal her pancreatitis
* use this trial for his glory

- Wed 7 Sept
Dear brothers and sisters, God has mercifully answered your prayers. Bronwyn came home last night. She still has some residual (but very manageable) pain from the resolving pancreatitis. We still don’t know the actual cause conclusively, but the doctors have understandably adopted a wait and see approach. Not being able to eat (for a few days), coupled with her ongoing malabsorption, has meant even more weight loss. But thanks to God, her good spirits and humour remain unabated.

Although we don’t know how and why everything happens, we are grateful to know the God who knows how and why everything happens (in Jesus!). This lesson from the book of Job has been a gift of God throughout.

Thank you for your prayers, emails, phone calls, and personal visits. Sorry I cannot reply individually.

Please thank God that
* Bronwyn is back home.
* the other patients and medical staff knew she was a Christian as friends prayed with her

Please ask God
* to prevent the pancreatitis from recurring and heal her for his glory, if it is his will.
* help many others come to know him through our experience somehow.

Love the Chin family.

Michael & Jo Charles with their children; Sam, Caleb, Emma & Lola are serving with Church Mission Society in Santiago, Chile and are one of Dapto’s Link Missionaries.

We’ve just received 3 newsletters in quick succession from the Charles family in the field in Santiago, Chile.

They’ve had a busy few months with friends Rev Andrew & Heather Reid (Holy Trinity Doncaster, Melbourne) joining them leading up to Easter for an intensive course on the book of Exodus.

Great news about Jo’s women’s bible study group. The ladies decided to continue meeting while Jo was in Australia. A very big step for these ladies! They discovered that they didn’t need Jo to run this group and learnt instead to trust God. They are studying Isaiah and while a little bogged down are making great links from the Old and New Testament.

More recently, Michael reports on a mission to Antofagasta where they spent a week in evangelistic events. A highlight for Michael was being able to preach in English at a service held for nearby miners. It was great for the students with him to see a very different part of Chile and experience the difficult reality of a minig city where there is a high turnover of congregation members due to short-term contract work.

Why not check out their newsletters #77 to #79 for yourself by clicking on the links here.

As we support our Link Missionary Richard Chin – who works as the National Director for AFES; working to bring the gospel to the students attending our Universities, Richard and his family are struggling through suporting wife & Mum Bronwyn who has been afflicted with cancer. Read on and uphold Richard and his family with prayer.

Richard writes the following:
Dear brothers and sisters, I am so sorry for being out of touch.

Bronwyn remains fragile. She hovers around 39-40 kg and has chronic back pain. This means she is unable to sit in a chair or stand upright for long periods of time. Although we don’t know exactly what is causing the pain, a recurrence of cancer is at the top of the short list.We have a CT scan next Tue (12th July) which will reveal more. Either way the treatment is the same with sporadic chemotherapy.

However, although her diarrhoea is constant due to the surgery, her vomiting has settled (apart from when she has chemotherapy). But she remains (as always) in good spirits with good humour in the sovereign grace of God. She is also able to get to church and bible study most weeks. At church she sits in a bean bag in the office foyer listening through a speaker that broadcasts the entire service. We usually share this intimate ’church plant’ with some mums and babies.

In God’s kindness, our children remain well because of Bronwyn’s incredible endurance.

As I write, Naomi (15), and Grace (13) are at a CMS Camp called Triple M. Thomas (11) has enjoyed a local Christian Kid’s holiday club, and Rachel (17) is studying hard for her HSC.

Our church family continue to flood us with love – organising meals, a cleaner for our home, mowing our grass, and regularly praying for us.

I am weary but generally well and am due to speak on the books of Joshua, and Job, … and the mission at the Wollongong campus soon.

On the AFES front,

It is Mid Year Conference season across the nation. Students are engaging with God for a week in campus or regional conferences exploring great doctrines such as the Cross, church, relationships, and humanity.

Some dear supporters have enabled us to set up the “AFES New Ministry Initiative” to seed fund strategic staff appointments throughout Australia.

Please continue to thank God for

* preserving Bronwyn’s life and hope in him

* keeping our children well

* the opportunity to know Him better and make Him known at our Mid Year Conferences

* the generosity of friends to set up the New Ministry Initiative

Please ask our Father

* to cure Bronwyn if it is His will and alleviate her back pain

* to continually strengthen her with a steadfast joy in Him

* keep our horizons large with a ballast of humility and a sails full of adoration for Jesus

* to transform the lives of the thousands of students meeting at conferences this month into the image of Jesus.

* to raise up more workers for the University harvest field in Australia and overseas.

Thank you for loving us,

the Chin family.

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

Bronwyn’s father sadly passed away early on Easter Sunday. Although he never professed to be a Christian, he read a long letter from Bronwyn explaining the gospel a few days before, and prayed with us in response to Psalm 23. He even asked God to have mercy on Bronwyn with regard to her cancer.

His funeral is on at 1:30 pm Tue 3rd May at St. Matthews Anglican Church, Manly. Bronwyn will be praying and I will give a brief talk from Psalm 23 at the service.

In the mean time:
* Bronwyn’s mother is still recovering from a triple bypass.
* Bronwyn is well enough to receive chemotherapy
* Her sister (Michelle) will be with our family whilst I am speaking at a convention for medical students and staff in Queensland this weekend (on the theme of suffering – teaching the
book of Habakkuk).
* Our children started back at school after a busy and fruitful break.

Please pray that
* the funeral service will glorify God and turn Bronwyn’s wider family back to him.
* the chemotherapy keeps Bronwyn’s cancer at bay and she has enough energy for the funeral.
* Richard will speak faithfully and well this weekend.
* Our children keep looking to Jesus.

Thanks for loving us,
Richard Chin.

We used our DAC discipleship pathway to inform our time together, praying for
1. our connecting activities;
2. Each other who gather together throughout the week;
3. Our growth in the Lord;
4. Our care ministries which seek to meet both spiritual and material need throughout Dapto, Australia and around the world.

It was an enormous encouragement to see so many people come along, but also to know that many more were praying throughout the week in their Growth Groups, prayer triplets, and by themselves.

Prayer is such an important part of what we do for it expresses our fundamental dependence upon the Lord who works in and through His people.

Here are two simple ways to help you be a praying person:
1. Meet up with a trusted friend for the purpose of praying for each other.
2. Read a psalm every day, using it as the beginning of a time of personal prayer.

Prayer is the most basic expression of our trust in God and our desire to live according to His pleasure and purpose.
