The Voice

Next weekend, Australia votes on the referendum to constitutionally mandate a process of Indigenous consultation as part of enacting relevant legislation. According to the polls, the ‘NO’ vote may prevail.

Whichever way the vote goes, I think a couple of comments can be made. First, there is a gap between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous rates of health, mortality, various forms of abuse, DV, education, and other factors. It would be good to close this gap. Successive governments have tried, with diverse consultation processes, but the gap remains. Efforts must continue.

Second, whatever the intentions, some of the outcomes of the process to date have increased incidents of racism, anxiety among the indigenous peoples, and divisions within Australia as a whole. It is a shame when politics divides, rather than serves the people.

The Diocesan Synod had the opportunity to listen to three Indigenous Christians, including two members of our Synod, along with Neville Naden, the National Indigenous Officer for BCA. A report on this discussion can be found by clicking the attached button.

However the vote falls next weekend, the Anglican Diocese of Sydney is committed to ministry and supporting gospel work among the Indigenous peoples of Australia. Within the Diocese, multiple specific ministries are led by and targeted towards the First Peoples of this land.

You are invited to support this ministry by donating to Macarthur, Mount Druitt & Shoalhaven Indigenous Ministries with the Anglican Church Property Trust.
